Why I Grow It

I grow bibb lettuce because it is one of the most beautiful, delicious greens and it's easy to grow in the city. It handles NYC's Zone 7b climate well and adapts to containers, balconies, or hydroponic setups easily. I also use it for intercropping to squeeze every inch of soil in my limited space. I plant it alongside radishes, scallions, or carrots to keep my garden productive all season long. Growing it at home, I have fresher greens and it cuts down on plastic grocery waste. I love snapping off a few clean, crisp leaves for lunch right when I need them.

Growth Essentials

Light

Bib lettuce needs 4-6 hours of direct sunlight. Partial shade in hotter climates. Indoors: Ideal for pots; provide bright light or use grow lights for 10-12 hours daily.

Water

Keep the soil consistently moist, watering regularly. Indoors, check soil moisture frequently; outdoors, water regularly, especially in full sun conditions. Mulching helps retain moisture.

Temperature

Bib lettuce is a cool weather crop and loves 40-75°F, ideally 60-65°F. Plant outdoors in March-May and August-September in NYC zone 7b. Indoors, maintain 60-65°F year-round.

Containers

Indoors: 6-8" wide, 6" deep, 1 gallon. Outdoors: 8-10" wide, 8-10" deep, 2-3 gallons

Soil

Bib lettuce loves rich potting mix with good moisture retention, enriched with compost from vegetable peelings or well-rotted manure. Water regularly to keep the soil moist.

Fertilizer

Use high-nitrogen fertilizer 20-10-10 every 3-4 weeks. Organic options: compost tea, fish emulsion. Regular fertilization ensures tender, flavorful leaves.

Harvesting Tips

Harvest outer leaves or the whole head regularly to prevent bolting. Consistent trimming provides a continuous supply of fresh, crisp leaves.

Harvest Time

Quick: 6 Weeks

Common Growing Issues

Why are my leaves turning yellow?

Why It's Happening:

This is usually from too much water. In NYC, the air is often sticky and humid, which prevents the soil from drying out.

How to Fix It:

Make sure your pot has holes in the bottom. Use a light potting mix with worm castings. Only water when the top of the soil feels dry.

Why is my lettuce growing a tall stalk?

Why It's Happening:

This is called bolting. It happens when the NYC heat island effect makes the plant think it is time to make seeds.

How to Fix It:

Once it bolts, the leaves become bitter. To prevent this, grow lettuce in the spring or fall when it is cooler. Use a sunshade on very hot days.

Why is my lettuce wilting?

Why It's Happening:

Lettuce has shallow roots. The heat from NYC concrete and brick walls can dry out the roots in a few hours.

How to Fix It:

Water your lettuce in the early morning. If it is very hot, move your pot to a shaded spot. Adding compost helps the soil hold onto moisture.

What are these tiny bugs on the leaves?

Why It's Happening:

Aphids love the tender, sweet leaves of Bibb lettuce. They are very common in city gardens and balconies.

How to Fix It:

You can buy ladybugs to release on your lettuce to eat the aphids. You can also wash the bugs off with a gentle spray of water in your sink.

What are these tiny bugs on the leaves?

Why It's Happening:

This is leaf spot. It happens because city air does not move well between tall buildings, making the air stay wet and sticky.

How to Fix It:

Give your plants more space so air can move between them. Pour water on the soil, not the leaves. Use beneficial nematodes to keep the plant strong.
