Why I Grow It

I grow mustard greens because they are a cool weather crop I can squeeze into my garden in the spring or fall. They grow so fast that I get to enjoy multiple harvests throughout the year. I'll intercrop them with other crops like radishes, carrots, and beets to make the most of my limited soil space. Growing them at home is a simple way to eat more leafy green and boost my iron intake.

Growth Essentials

Light

Mustard greens prefer 4-6 hours of direct sunlight. Partial shade tolerated. Indoors: Grow in pots with bright light or hydroponically using grow lights for 10-12 hours.

Water

Keep the soil consistently moist, watering regularly. Indoors, monitor soil moisture frequently; outdoors, water regularly, especially during hot weather. Mulching helps retain moisture.

Temperature

Mustard greens are a cool weather crop and prefer 45-85°F, ideally 60-75°F. Plant outdoors in March-May and August-September in NYC zone 7b. Indoors, maintain 60-75°F year-round.

Containers

Indoors: 6-8" wide, 6" deep, 1 gallon.

Outdoors: 8-10" wide, 10-12" deep, 3-5 gallons.

Soil

Mustard greens thrive in well-draining mix with organic matter, such as compost from vegetable peelings or aged manure.

Fertilizer

Use high-nitrogen fertilizer 20-10-10 every 3-4 weeks.

Organic Options: fish emulsion, compost tea. Consistent fertilization supports vigorous growth.

Common Growing Issues

Why are my leaves turning yellow?

Why It's Happening:

This is usually a sign of overwatering or poor drainage. In NYC, humid air prevents soil from drying out as fast as it should.

How to Fix It:

Make sure your pot has plenty of holes. Add worm castings to the soil to help it drain better. Only water when the top of the soil feels dry.

What are these tiny bugs on my greens?

Why It's Happening:

Aphids love the spicy juice of mustard greens. Because NYC is a heat island, these bugs can appear earlier and stay longer.

How to Fix It:

Buy ladybugs to release on your plants to eat the aphids. You can also spray the leaves with a strong stream of water and a little mild soap.

Why is my plant growing so slowly?

Why It's Happening:

Mustard greens grow fast and use up soil energy quickly. In small pots, they run out of food within just a few weeks.

How to Fix It:

Feed your plants a high-nitrogen plant food (like 10-5-5) every two weeks. Mixing compost into your pot once a month will also help.

Why is my mustard plant wilting?

Why It's Happening:

Even though they like cool weather, the sun reflecting off NYC buildings can be very hot and dry out small pots.

How to Fix It:

Water your greens in the morning so they stay cool. If the afternoon sun is too strong on your balcony, move the pot to a slightly shaded spot.

Why is there gray fuzz on the leaves?

Why It's Happening:

Do not crowd your plants. Cut off the sick leaves and throw them away. Use beneficial nematodes in the soil to keep the root system strong.ll buildings.

How to Fix It:

Make sure your pot has great drainage. Only water when the top inch of soil feels dry. Mixing in worm castings helps the soil stay healthy without holding too much water.
