Why I Grow It

I grow oregano because it is incredibly easy. Once established, it comes back every year, so I never need to buy it at the grocery store. I love having a fresh supply on hand for my pizzas and pastas. It has antimicrobial benefits on the gut and of course tastes great. It fits perfectly in small pots and intercrops well. I plant it alongside my tomatoes, peppers and eggplants.

Growth Essentials

Light

Oregano thrives with 6-8 hours of direct sunlight. Partial shade in hot regions.

Indoors: Perfect for pots; ensure bright light or use grow lights for 10-12 hours daily.

Water

Allow the soil to dry out between waterings. Oregano prefers a drier environment. Indoors, ensure good air circulation; outdoors, water deeply but infrequently.

Temperature

Oregano is perennial and enjoys 50-85°F, ideally 60-70°F. Plant outdoors in April-May and August-September in NYC zone 7b. Indoors, keep at 60-70°F year-round.

Containers

Indoors: 6-8" wide, 6" deep, 1 gallon.

Outdoors: 8-10" wide, 10" deep, 2-3 gallons

Soil

Oregano thrives in a well-draining potting mix with compost like aged manure or mushroom compost. Water when the top inch of soil is dry.

Fertilizer

Fertilize sparingly with 10-10-10 every 6-8 weeks.

Organic Options: bone meal, kelp meal. Over-fertilizing reduces oregano’s flavor intensity.

Harvesting Tips

Trim oregano stems regularly to prevent legginess and harvest before flowering for best flavor. This promotes bushier growth and more vigorous plants.

Harvest Time

Moderate: 7-8 Weeks

Common Growing Issues

Why are my leaves turning yellow?

Why It's Happening:

Oregano hates having wet roots. NYC humidity or heavy rain can keep soil too soggy in plastic pots.

How to Fix It:

Make sure your pot has great drainage. Only water when the top inch of soil feels dry. Mixing in worm castings helps the soil stay healthy without holding too much water.

What are these tiny webs on my plant?

Why It's Happening:

Spider mites love the hot, dry air on NYC balconies and rooftops. They are very common in the city heat.

How to Fix It:

Spray the plant with a strong stream of water to break the webs. You can also buy ladybugs to eat the mites or use a mix of water and mild soap.

Why is my plant growing so slowly?

Why It's Happening:

In the city, plants in pots run out of nutrients. The heat island effect can also make the plant stop growing to save energy.

How to Fix It:

Feed your oregano a balanced 10-10-10 plant food or compost once a month. This gives it the energy it needs to keep growing in the heat.

Why is my plant tall and skinny?

Why It's Happening:

This is called leggy growth. It happens when tall buildings block the sun and the plant stretches to find light.

How to Fix It:

Move your plant to a spot that gets at least 6 to 8 hours of sun. If you cannot find more sun, trim the tops of the plant to help it grow wider.

Why is my oregano wilting?

Why It's Happening:

Almost all NYC ground soil is unsafe because of lead and old pollution from traffic and building projects.

How to Fix It:

Check your plant every afternoon. If the soil is bone dry and the plant is drooping, give it a good soak. Adding a little compost can help the soil stay moist longer.
